A true Northern California strain, Blue Dream grows massive and produces potent and heavy harvests. The history of the strain is shrouded in some mystery, but rumor has it originating in possibly in the Santa Cruz area. Growth characteristics show its sativa dominant heritage, with lanky branches and long narrow leaves ending in long heavy colas. Not only is Blue Dream a favorite of commercial growers, but it also produces top shelf bud that both medicinal users and cannabis connoisseurs love. The high tends to be relaxing and mellow but clear headed and without the couch lock effects of some indica strains. The THC content is often quite high; however CBD content is generally under 1% and usually much lower. This is a great strain for pain management and tends to have longer lasting medicinal effects.

Looks

As you can see from the photos, this was a beautiful sample of Blue Dream. Every one of our 14 reviewers thought their sample looked at least average or better. Keep in mind these are some pretty tough critics.

Olga might have said it best.  “A gorgeous DENSE single gram nugget with a pale lime green color (not neon) with light orange hairs and a very even crystal distribution. An almost ivory effect from the light hairs and lots of crystals, very pretty.”

Smell

Identifying the scent of a strain can be challenging to even the most perceptive noses. Blue dream was no exception. The range of descriptions was impressive and everyone considered the odor at least average or better.

Here are some of the terms used to describe the samples of Blue Dream; sour lemon, sweet, piney, woody, orange citrus, fruity, blueberry, floral, perfume, fresh cut lawn, lavender, sage, summer rain, sweet alfalfa, and bubblegum candy. Quite the spread. With such a wide range I was surprised by Green Thumbs very specific identification. “These buds smell exactly like pine needles. This either has a very interesting smell or someone put some pine tree in the bag. Exactly like pine needles.”

Taste

With a few exceptions most everyone like the taste of the Blue Dream. Our reviewers described it as follows; sweet, slightly sweet and earthy, mango, floral, fresh lawn, toasty floral, peppery, dry hot and ripe, and bubblegum with tangy orange aftertaste.

GreenThumb again gave us the most interesting and humorous response, though not typical response.  “OOF! This is not a good tasting strain. The pine tree smell was immediately replaced with a heavy, sour cat piss smell and taste. I was using a vaporizer and my wife got mad at me because it smelled gross.”

Potency

The reviews on the potency of the Blue Dream samples were a bit more mixed than on the looks, smell and taste. Some experienced body highs, some head highs, and others experienced both or nothing at all. While many reported feeling relaxed and mellow there were no reports of couch lock or suggestions for evening use only.

Cancer Survivor said, “the high was great felt like I was floating!” Olga told us, “very mental and limbering. I felt almost numb at the base of my neck. It was a very enjoyable and mentally engaging buzz.” Mitchy on the other hand did not fare as well, “the only thing I received from this strain was a sore throat and a headache.”

Effectiveness

Despite the subjective aesthetics of Blue Dream what counts is if it works as medicine. 11 of our 14 reviewers found relief from their samples and said they would recommend the strain.

Green Thumb (PTSD) “I felt great! Except for the horrible taste in my mouth, I was all smiles and positive vibes. I had a great time relaxing and letting the day melt away. This is good medicine.”

Cancer Survivor (Leukemia) “This strain helped my body aches.”

Shortcakes (Lupus and Fibromyalgia) “This strain worked well for pain and muscle relaxation.”

Jill (ADHD) “I was able to fall asleep easily and that is good since I needed to study before bed.”

Water Goddess (Severe Menstrual Pain) “I felt total pain relief in my abdomen & almost total pain relief in my lower back, for about 3 hours.”

Jess-has-MS (Multiple Sclerosis) “I should add a caveat that I’d lost sleep the night before, so was already tired when I used; however, this strain helped to calm my neuropathic pain symptoms and helped me get to sleep. I’ve used other strains that were faster and/or stronger for my MS symptoms.”

Jackwagon (Liver Disease) “I wasn’t feeling particularly bad all day but i did have a stressful day and it relaxed me and helped give me a good food appetite.”

Yimbo (Pain) “This worked great for me. My left foot did not want to get going this morning (arthritis). About 30 min. after smoking this morning my pain was almost down to nothing and was able get my day going.”

Olga (Cartilage and Ligament Damage) “I felt very relaxed and like I was able to move about with ease. I used the strain when my symptoms in my knee were particularly bad, and they were greatly aided about a half hour after smoking.”

Krisha (Neuropathy) “It was very relaxing to my tense muscles and really helped with the nerve pain. I slept through the night and felt refreshed in the morning.”

Three of our reviewers found little or no benefit from their samples of Blue Dream and reported they would not recommend this strain for others with their condition.

Mindhead (Severe Back Pain) “Back pain subsided yet numbness in leg still persisted.”

Mitchy (Chronic Arthritic Pain, Carpal Tunnel and Fibroid Tumors) “No improvement was noted for my chronic hand and arm pain.”

Dez (Arthritis, Back and Hip Pain, Contact Dermatitis) “This strain did not work at all for my conditions.”

Side Effects

Only three reviews reported any negative side effects from smoking or vaporizing Blue Dream. Cancer Survivor said he experienced “Slight headache after but nothing major.” Yimbo reported a little dry mouth 45 minutes after smoking. Mitchy seemed to fare the worst and told us Blue Dream, “Was very harsh on the throat, led to coughing and then headache.”
